Getting your baby comfortable in a swimming environment and learning how to be safe in the water is a life skill. From teaching water safety skills to boosting their confidence in and out of the water, taking your little one swimming as early as possible can help children in the early years with their emotional, cognitive, and physical development.
Baby swimming also provides focused time with your child, which helps to strengthen the bond between you, through holding them close and skin-to-skin contact in the comforting warmth of the water. It's place for you to have fun too.
Babies are safe in a supervised environment from birth, however to give you and your baby sufficient recovery time, we start lessons from 3 months +.
Mums should wait until their post-natal bleeding has stopped before taking their baby swimming.
Based on NHS guidelines, your baby doesn't need vaccinations before getting into the pool. However, if you have any concerns pre-immunisation, we do advise that you speak to your doctor or health visitor.
Comfortable swimwear, a swimming hat and a towel for you. A plastic bag for wet clothes is useful. We have two beach hut changing rooms so space is limited. We advise you arrive beach-ready where possible, so that it's just your baby that needs changing.
For the swimming itself we operate the Happy Nappy double nappy system. This system consists of an aqua nappy such as Huggies. This is followed by a snug-fitting neoprene layer "Happy Nappy" over the top. Both types of nappy can be bought online from places such as splashabout.com, Amazon and other retailers.
PLEASE NOTE: we cannot allow loose-fitting nappies in the pool as they must be able to contain solid waste to prevent water contamination. Please also bring a plastic bag to take your babies nappies home with you.
We also recommend a swim vest or a baby wetsuit too, as an added layer of warmth. These can also be purchased from the same online retailers and also act as sun protection.
Finally, warm clothes! This is an outdoor pool so please bring a warm baby hat, towel or poncho to keep babies as warm as possible post-swim. Please get babies changed into their warm clothes and hat as soon as possible upon exiting the pool.
We have standard foam mats in our changing huts that you can use for changing your baby, but do please bring a towel to cover them, or use your own should you wish.
Yes, we have a specialised (and fully qualified) parent and baby / parent and toddler teacher.
Our ethos is to have small classes so that you get individual attention and focus to make your time in the water worthwhile, calm and enjoyable. During lessons you'll be with your baby in the water alongside a maximum of two other parents/guardians with their babies, plus the teacher.
Babies - It's advisable to feed babies one hour before the lesson - just keep it light! This ensures they won't get hungry in the water. If they do need milk closer to the time, it's ok to feed them.
Toddlers - We also suggest leaving it an hour between their meal / solid food and starting a lesson.
There is a toilet on site but we're sorry, we don't have shower facilities and ask that you shower afterwards at home.
